Trinidad Oceanfront Properties and View Properties
Trinidad, California has some of the most sought-after real estate in the Northern California. Its position on Humboldt County's north coast is one-of-a-kind. It enjoys access to most modern conveniences like building supplies, restaurants, entertainment and typical requirements to live and work in an area, but its also private and has an exclusive feel to it.
Basic types of real estate in Trinidad are: Oceanfront or Bayfront, Oceanview or Bayview, Redwood Properties, Raw Land, Acreage and in-town houses. While some properties may seem expensive, when you compare them to similar properties in Southern California, they are actually quite affordable. Some of the oceanfront homes even have beach access or beach frontage for properties who border the pacific ocean.
View properties are more common (both Pacific Ocean or Trinidad Bay) as well as less pricey. With a dozen or so beaches at your fingertips, oceanfront is not a necessity here. The properties you buy here will likely become family treasures and owned for generations. Properties in Trinidad have an extremely high resale value even if you do sell and most would probably end up making a profit.
Real Estate Inventory for oceanfront properties and view properties fluctuates with some years having more than we can handle, and some years everything dries up. You could say it comes and goes with the tides, or in waves to use the coastal terms. The more incredible, the more rare it is to see them and also the more expensive. Sometimes they will sit and wait for the right person, but other times we have multiple bidders on the same property the day it goes on the market. Some people who are intent on looking for that special property that hits all the marks end up waiting for years. Many people go through more than one property or house on the journey to "the one." In order to secure epic real estate, you'll need to have good allies (that's us!) on your side carefully monitoring and alerting you when "the one" becomes available. We can help you either way including when its time to sell your property. You can use the "save search" feature and "market reports" on our website as well to help keep your finger on the pulse.
Developing and building a house in Trinidad, California
Some people have the energy to buy raw land and develop their own properties - in fact some prefer it. You will often find raw-land here in Trinidad and the surrounding areas. But keep in mind that if you’re on the ocean, you will need to go through the California Coastal Commission’s strict and time-consuming rules and permitting process. None-the-less, the effort is probably worth it.
Home and property prices in general can vary greatly here. There are multi-million-dollar homes with beach access, some with frontage. Some have incredible views off bluffs and distant ocean views. We also have a fair share of redwood properties if you like it a little quieter. Westhaven is a wonderful town and kind of an offshoot of Trinidad with gorgeous ocean view properties and homes with easy access and within walking distance the Moonstone Beach, one of Humboldt County’s most popular beaches. You can still get fixer-uppers if you’re lucky, raw land outside of the coastal commission for $100k and up, but this is not an ongoing thing, like we mentioned, you have to watch this market closely. We recommend doing a “Saved Search” or creating a Market Report for Trinidad and our software will email you when new properties come on the market – or are listed on the MLS. Average home prices are about $500,000 or so.
Trinidad is a Sound Real Estate Investment:
It should be hard to lose with Trinidad real estate, especially the coastal properties and ocean view properties. While even the best investments can go bad in a worst-case scenario, at least you can live comfortably in yours while you wait out any market down-turns. Redwood properties and Oceanfront properties seem to be going up in value every year. They simply are not making more of these locations and the coast is filling up fast. When compared to other locations along any U.S. coastal towns, the prices here are still relatively tame. Once you throw in Trinidad's close proximity to the airport, larger towns with employment and shopping, as well as state and national parks, and we'd say this location is a winner with a high resale value. Beaches in Trinidad:
There are at least a dozen state and county public beaches. Each beach is different and varies in style. Some are long fine sandy beaches good for hanging out, walking and enjoying the sunset, some are small rocks that people like to collect and offer great beachcombing. We have beaches especially good for surfing due to the currents and rocks. Some are great for kayaking, paddle boarding and other water sports. Others are loaded with tide pools and a great place for the kids to get acquainted with local marine life. There is also rugged California coastline that provides great shore fishing for catching rock fish and ling-cod. Some have incredible rock formations including arches that have been created by the pounding waves. We have ocean beaches and we have beaches along Trinidad Bay which are popular for the kids to swim in. The variety is stunning.
A short list of the most popular beaches in Trinidad: Trinidad State Beach, complete with hiking trail on the iconic "Trinidad Head." One of Humboldt County's most popular beaches is Moonstone Beach and is complete with fine dining options and even rental for ceremonies, weddings etc. It's a great place with children playing on the beach, the occasional horseback riding, or people rock climbing on the beach cliffs. Many simply enjoying the evening sunset. Luffenholtz Beach is a County Park, Baker Beach and College Cove - just to name a few. The Trinidad Head itself is an iconic 46 acre peninsula and popular walking trail that most anyone can handle, located right in town. It features amazing views the entire walk, showcasing the Pacific Ocean, Trinidad Bay, Trinidad Pier and the town of Trinidad itself with lots of sea-stacks and large uninhabited rock islands. Views of the harbor and its boats, kayakers - and on the right days, you'll even see migrating whales. You can even tour the operational Trinidad Lighthouse. In 2017, President Obama and the U.S. Congress signed a declaration ordaining The Trinidad Head as a California Coastal and National Monument.
Ocean and Bay Amenities
Trinidad has a public boat launch at Old Home Beach on Trinidad Bay that can launch most motor boats, or just push the kayak in the water here. It's often a meeting place for kayak tour groups as the bay is a great place to paddle around. The boat launch even has a service to pull bigger boats out on shore for you. There is a nice parking lot here that accommodates boat trailers. The Seascape restaurant, and the Trinidad Pier are also here. This is a commercial fishing pier that is open for the public to walk on, or fish off of. You can also try your luck at crabbing here. This is a common meeting place for the many fishing charter boat companies, and kayak tour groups. If you investigate, you'll also find surfing lessons and paddle board lessons are going on most of the time. Public restrooms, trashcans to keep things neat and clean.
Trinidad Public School
Trinidad Union School District is another of the many reasons to make Trinidad your way of life. This K-8 school is one of the more popular schools in Humboldt County and many people from McKinleyville to Arcata make the trek everyday just so their kids can attend. Cal Poly University (formerly HSU) has a marine lab here with a 40,000 gallon sea tank filled with marine life. The school regularly brings the kids here on field trips, and the kids are thoroughly educated in marine biology and science. Beaches field trips and tide pooling are activities they will participate in, and even camping on the beach for the older kids before graduation. The school has an avid music program, and grows some of its own food that is served in the lunchroom.
Festivals, Art and Dining in Trinidad is varied and Excellent!
Dining in Trinidad is also great. We have at least two fine dining restaurants, one on the water at Moonstone Beach, and then the Larrupin' Café, a very popular dining experience on Patrick's Point Drive. (make reservations or face disappointment). We also have several seafood restaurants, Moonstone Wine Tasting, Headies Pizza Shop, and more.
Weather and Festivities
Summer is great. Perfect weather keeping you cool while you enjoy the sun. Trinidad also enjoys live music on Trinidad Arts Night in the parking lot of the Lighthouse Grill with most businesses keeping the doors open late and serving the community and tourist wine and snacks, while letting you peruse the local artwork that is displayed on the walls and in the Trinidad Art Gallery. Multiple festivals take place annually here as well.
Vacation Rental Business
Many people are buying properties and attempting to turn them into vacation rental businesses, as you can imagine the market is here. However, be careful of the laws governing short-term rentals as the city has tried to curb it on multiple occasions in order to maintain the community feel we have here. Many of these homes and properties fall outside of the city limits though and can be rented out under the unincorporated Humboldt County guidelines. Vacation Rentals tend to be on the pricey side here.
