Finding the Right Neighborhood in McKinleyville
McKinleyville, California is a popular bedroom community that featuring a tranquil way of life, and a variety of neighborhoods and for the lucky and those who can afford it there are also neighborhoods bordering the Mad River and Pacific Ocean. McKinleyville is an excellent residential destination. Many prospective homebuyers are immediately drawn to McKinleyville homes for sale when researching where to settle down in Humboldt County. McKinleyville started out with very modest beginnings and is a collection of smaller communities that changed name in the early 1900's to honor President William McKinley, the 25th president of the United States. Although its prime location made it an excellent place to invest in a property, it wasn't until the 1990's when the town experienced a resurgence. Today, the market for McKinleyville homes for sale offers residences that enjoy enviable settings from gated communities to the oceanfront. Residents also have access to beautiful local parks, hiking and biking trails, various community-wide festivals, nearby Cal Poly - Humboldt University, strong local schools, entertainment and more.
McKinleyville Oceanfront or Ocean View Properties
Knox Cove Drive and Sand Pointe on the west side of Hwy 101 (oceanside) in McKinleyville are probably the nicest neighborhoods for ocean lifestyle in McKinleyville. It's not overly expensive as far as coastal properties go, but no guarantees that anything is available on the real estate market at a given time, either. Like anything on the ocean, these properties are coveted. Beach access from these oceanfront homes is also often tricky with the Mad River blocking the way before it meets the ocean at Moonstone Beach in Westhaven, the small community south of Trinidad. This makes beach access difficult without a kayak or small boat. The Hammond Trail runs through this area, too This is a 5.5 mile section of the California Coastal Trail system stretching from Mad River Beach in Arcata to Clam Beach in McKinleyville. The Hammond Trail is great for walking, running, bicycling and birdwatching. Best of all the trail is along the ocean providing excellent views as you traverse it. You'll even see the occasional seals and sealions.
There are several other places to buy real estate that have excellent ocean views situated on the bluff. Although the ocean view properties are primarily on the bluff across from the ocean, and on the other side of Hwy. 101, you can still get to the beach in minutes with Clam Beach just on the other side of the overpass. Clam beach is a popular public beach on the Pacific Ocean. These would be the best neighborhoods to get lucky with ocean life.
McKinleyville's Location in Humboldt County
Humboldt County's Arcata Airport, the Only Commercial Airport is in McKinleyville
McKinleyville is located on highway 101, six miles north of Arcata and 8 miles south of Westhaven, also off highway 101. Westhaven is a small community on the ocean adjacent to the more well known City of Trinidad, which is 2 miles further north. McKinleyville is also located on the Pacific Ocean. Highway 101 divides the east side of McKinleyville where most business and residences are from the west side which has beaches, trails and some of the nicest oceanfront properties and real estate.
Dows Prairie is a town adjacent on the north side of McKinleyville and close enough to live there but still consider yourself from McKinleyville. It's important to remember these towns we are mentioning because the are extra housing options when you begin your search for home purchases. In Dows Prairie you'll find a more rural lifestyle, larger yards and even acreage. Plenty of people have horses, livestock, chickens, and small farms. There are even some larger sized farms here and redwood properties. Dows Prairie is very close to Clam Beach and the ocean as well, which in turn is really not far from Trinidad and it's beaches. All the while, McKinleyville is just minutes away for schools, employment, shopping and entertainment.
The rural lifestyle is also available Fieldbrook to the east of McKinleyville as well as Azalea Hills and North Bank Road on the south and east. The rural communities are only a few minutes outside of McKinleyville, but you have larger properties with possibilities for horses, cattle ranching and farms in parts of them and you'll find redwood properties available here, too. You'll still be close to McKinleyville.
Any further than that, and you'll be heading out of the McKinleyville area. It's worth noting for awareness that North Bank Road leads to Highway 299 and seven miles east from here you'll arrive in Blue Lake. Past Blue Lake and you'll be heading towards Trinity County, but only after passing through some of Humboldt's most inland and eastern communities of Titlow Hill, Willow Creek, Salyer, Hawkins Bar and Hoopa.
McKinleyville Employment and Economic Base
Surprisingly McKinleyville is not an incorporated city, it is served by Humboldt County and governed under county guidelines, with help from the McKinleyville Community Services District. McKinlelyville services and supports many people in the northern part of Humboldt County for supplies who don't want to drive the extra hour to get to Eureka. It's economy is primarily derived from the health care industry, and to a lesser extent retail and food service, and also helped by the agricultural industries operating on the outskirts of town. The cannabis businesses in McKinleyville have also made a contribution but its not easy to tell the exact amounts of that particular the industry.
