Arcata, California is located on Humboldt County's North Coast, between Eureka and McKinleyville and is situated north end of Humboldt Bay and nature preserve the Arcata Marsh. The population according to the latest census numbers is just under 20,000 residents. Not surprisingly a large percentage of the population consist of college students and graduates which lends to Arcata's freedom seeking, youthful vibe. There are lots of coffee shops, restaurants and nightlife and is somewhat infamous for its liberal bias and has a population full of artist and free-thinkers. In general Arcata public schools are rated highly.
Many east side homes have views of the ocean and bay. Arcata Plaza, in the heart of town, is home to many restaurants, bars, unique gift shops, bookstores, coffee shops, and has an excellent farmer’s market. The greater area has dozens of beaches in Trinidad, along with countless county, state and national parks including the reknown Redwood National & State Park. Travel is unnecessary, however, as the Arcata Community Forest is perfect for a hike through the Redwoods, just minutes from downtown.
Public and Private Schools in Arcata
The public and private school system in Arcata is very good. There are 15 public and private schools in Arcata. In 2023, and for several years now, the highest rated schools in Arcata and most popular school districts to live in are where you find Union Pacific Charter School with a ratio of one teacher to every 17 students followed by Jacoby Creek Elementary which is one teacher per 22 students.
Of course, Arcata is also home to a highly rated college - California State Polytechnic University known as Cal Poly Humboldt, and formerly Humboldt State University. The university host nearly 6,000 college students every year which helps to infuse the local economy with capital and also creates an intelligent, vibrant and youthful community.
Economy and Employment Opportunity in Arcata
It's not suprising with 17 public and private schools in Arcata , plus Cal Poly Humboldt University, that the number one factor powering Arcata's economy are educational institutions, responsible for about 23% of the local economy. Cal Poly employs about 500 people alone. Three other industries make stand-out contributions: Healthcare about 13%, hospitality / food service around 11%, and the retail sector also around 11%. Slightly less is the scientific and technolgy sectors 7% and many smaller sectors make up the rest. Cannabis is not really listed in terms of public data, which seems off to us, as the cannabis industry contributed quite a bit as we know. It's possible that much of that capital never was officially recorded.
In terms of employment, in a "college town," a large portion of the population doesn't work, so it doesn't apply. As well, they only live here part of the year so they do not count in terms of unemployment statitics, of which Arcata is about average, reports vary from about 6% which is close to national average, however we've seen reports as high as 14%, which is rather high. The economic prospects of living and working in Arcata without having already established a source of income are not the best. Salaries tend to be lower here overall and the cost of living is rather high.
